Then and Now..

Ever since the media revolution took place in 1992-1993 Television holds a major stake in peoples leisure and entertainment. Prior to this people had only two option DD national and DD metro . Zee tv emerged into horizons of Indian television during these times , which coincides with the time when Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization policies were taking baby steps in India.

Shows like " Taara" " Bangei Apni Baat" "Hum Panch" "Zee horror show" " Waah Kya scene hain" hosted by arhcna puran singh gave a new variety to the existing usual's like "Swabhiman" "Shanti" etc. Gradually new channels like Sony, Star Plus sprung up and Channels which showcased olden gold movies 24 hours were also inducted to Indian audiences. My favouraite channel was Cartoon Network :P . I was only 9 years old when it was broadcast-ed and unlike now, the channel then used to feature Hanna Barbara classics "Jetsons" "Flinstones" "Yogi Bear" "Popeye". The good thing about cartoon network was that the telecast of cartoons would stop at 17:00 hours. My some what English proficiency can be attributed to cartoons and the round the clock sports channels.

Well 14 years later when I compare the shows of now and then I feel somewhat dis-grunted that the quality of television shows is taking a nose dive. With a tumultuous increase in television channels the entertain is just keeps getting appalling. Apart from few shows on SAB TV there are hardly any channels which can be watched over by dinner by the entire family. The overdose of preplanned reality shows has left a bitter taste of what started as an exotic change. The music channels (Channel Vs , M tvs ) seldom show human beings in socially acceptable attire and the shows have to speech censored 70% of the times, you are more likely to hear Beeps than the music. The zillions of regional and national new channel are anchored and managed by biased people of the first order, since last year the media has not only become a bitch of ruling party of India and but also acting as their PR partner (more on that in separate blog). The sport channels are overdosed with cricket which is fast loosing its charm on youth and also with anglicized football.(Barclay premier league)

The only shows worth watching are "Tarak Mehta ka Oolta Chashma"
" Highway on my plate" (for me atleast). Thank god for you tube :P. Television has most definitely reached the point of satiety for me.(Alfred Marshals Law of DMU).
